Book review of:
Who Told You That You were naked? A refreshing examination of the Garden of Eden: By Rev (Ret) William E. Combs Doctor of Ministry, Fuller Theological Seminary. 224 pp, $ 9.99, ISBN 978-1-945507-23-6. Published in 2016 by Carpenter’s Son publishing, Franklin -Tennessee.
Salvation and the relevance of the Gospel in the lives of the peoples of the twenty-first century is the main message the Reverend William Combs wishes to share with his fellow human beings. Propelled by almost a half century at the pulpit, Reverend Combs takes us on a journey that starts with Adam, alone in the Garden of Eden into modern day, showing us how important and relevant the Gospel still is in our lives, and that Salvation can only come through the Lord Jesus Christ.
Who –told- you –that- you- are- naked is an allegory that flows gently through profound issues of faith, navigating controversial issues to bring the reader safely to the shores of Salvation. The anecdotes that are sprinkled throughout the book aim at aligning today’s world to that depicted in the Bible.
In the Introduction, The Reverend Combs using an anecdote about a personal experience as a young boy growing up in Alaska, sums up the journey the reader is about to embark upon. The first two chapters take us back to the Garden of Eden; where we walk with Adam and see his relationship with God as never understood before. Eve comes into his life to alleviate his loneliness and ends up being entrapped by the Serpent, which led to their facing the difficult question of Who- told-You-that- You- are- Naked and our fully understanding what that question was all about. Chapter 3 brings us to a more gripping understanding of how Biblical Sin should be perceived: “A powerful adversary crouching at the door” and how we could fight succumbing to it! Chapter 4 primes us to understand the full impact of Sin and how we can be delivered from it, while Chapter 5 navigates us through the concept of faith as preached, taught and lived by the Lord Jesus Christ. Chapter 6, at least for me, is the Crescendo of the whole book, where the Thesis reaches its full zenith. Chapter 7 shows how we communicate with God: Through the Bible, the Voice of God and God’s Peace. How we must learn to recognize the Voice of God above the cacophony of modern life. Chapter 8 emphasis that even today we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against Satan, the Prince of the World. Satan is the Spirit that inspires people through working in them, hence we must resist by being sober minded and watchful. But, we can only achieve such a state through turning on the light of Jesus Christ through us. Here, the Author emphasis this point through a harrowing personal experience with Satan! Chapter 9 walks us through the meaning of God’s resting on the seventh day, He who knows neither fatigue nor tiring. The Author offers a novel and illuminating concept about the meaning of God’s Rest and how mere mortals can enter into such a state of Rest. What role Faith plays in our lives and in whom must our faith be. Chapter 10 re-emphasizes where our faith should be if we are to attain God’s salvation and how we must go about to have this Faith in all phases of our life.
Who Told You That You Were Naked is good reading for the Bible Student as well as the layman, for those that believe in Jesus Christ or those who are looking for deeper meaning of life. It is entertaining and educational. I liked that its Themes have given me a new and invigorating understanding of the Bible and the meaning of having Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as the only Savior. I found that the personal anecdotes, though in themselves quiet entertaining and informational, they cut from the free flowing style of the book.
I recommend this book to the readers who are looking for a more profound meaning for their lives and give it 3 stars out 4 stars.
