The book Gringo by Peter Conti is about the story of the life of Dan Davis from South Dakota. It narrates his growing up and how he ends up in crime despite being a good and hard working student. He began earning income at the age of ten and was used to getting anything he wanted when he wanted. His parents were farmers and they lived a middle class lifestyle. That motivated him to get more money. He went college and did well but his obsession with making money got the better of him.

The aspects I liked most were that it is a crime novel based on the cover. It also has a twist of romance in it. When Dan is told about Lisa's pregnancy, he responds saying that he would do everything in his power to be the best husband and father on planet Earth. When Dan visits Billy Valdez's uncle Babe, he is told to take off his clothes and get into the pool so they could discuss business, is a dramatic part. It makes you wonder what's going to happen next! The description of Lisa Lien's beauty in Dan's eyes is also noteworthy...."She was absolutely stunning in the soft light of the restaurant. She had a flowing mane of blond hair..." It's also informative about the evolution of drugs in their use and sale "Methamphetamine, a powerful amphetamine first made in Germany in 1887, and later developed in Japan in 1919...". It also tells us when the Drug Enforcement Agency was created to wage war against drugs in America.

The negative aspects of it are that there is use of a lot of slang and words that aren't found in the dictionary. An example is 'Gringo stupido'. Some expressions are vulgar ..."You out of your f****g mind, Gringo?" said Babe when Dan proposed that they change their 'white crosses' supplier.

I would recommend the book to people who love crime thriller experiences whether from books or movies. It's thrilling to read how Dan in his young age makes so much money in a week while still a college student. It is also for people who would like to know more about drugs like metamphetamine, cocaine, and cannabis while at the same time being entertained by the story.

I give it a rating of 3 out of 4 because it there a lot of grammar mistakes, when Dan and Lisa go out for dinner for the first time, Dan says they drank Italian wine, the appropriate phrase should be, "we had Italian wine."
