Raven’s Peak by Lincoln Cole is a book that will scare you with its horrors, thrill you with action-packed fantasy fiction, and intrigue you with curiosity & mystery of a real demon world.
This book has a very good prologue, which outmatches the rest of its chapters by a very extreme degree. The prologue starts with a horrific scene, where a former Demon hunter named Reverend, who had voluntarily isolated himself in an underground jail whipping himself as a ritual for cleansing his soul. He is then visited by a former colleague and council member, Frieda, who wanted his help for the last time to save Reverend's own family child, who is also a Hunter. This ends with some action fights and gives purpose for the rest of the chapters.
The story then mainly follows the life of Haatim; a jobless, recent graduate, frustrated person, who happens to have recently lost his faith on God because of his younger sister’s death due to cancer. He then stumbles upon a private detective job for Mr. George, who had a paranoia that someone has been following him for some days. Haatim’s job was just to gather some pictures incriminating the follower; a woman named Abigail so that some valid evidence could be brought before the police.
During Haatim’s job as a novice spy, things change dramatically when Abigail herself had to rescue him multiple times from Demons attacks. He ends up following her wherever she goes, just like a student to a mentor or a close friend relationship. They both head to Raven’s Peak, a backwater ancient mining town with a very sparse population. There, they find the most dangerous demon she has ever encountered in her life. The demon makes the town people go crazy and the people start making violence, looting shops, burning buildings and spreading chaos throughout the town. At one point they had to choose between their lives by fleeing the town or saving the town’s people from an impending disaster. They stick on to their conscience by staying in the town and battling the demon.
The author has done a quite good job by writing a semi feministic based novel without embarrassing the dignity of the passive leading male character, as the male protagonist gets something to do near the end. The story plods at the starting with a slow pace and then following with a horse galloping speed of rescues, actions and time constrained mission. I really liked the title of the story “Raven’s peak”, a town which only arrives at the second half of the novel, as I was always curious and wondering as to when the title is going to be stated in the story. Near the end, it was really exciting to read and get the claustrophobic feel when they both go for long spelunking. This first novel of the series "World on Fire" winds up on a helicopter, with a cliff hanger ending making a perfect climax. It will definitely make you want more of the remaining volumes.
However, despite an excellent idea of the story and well editing, there were lapses of solid communication by the characters. For example, the common replies like “I don’t know” phrase was often used throughout in many conversations by the main characters, which somewhat raises questions about the author's ability to develop extraordinary dialogues. And the Haatim’s character and personality were depicted implicitly as too childish and naïve at certain places that seemed too illogical.
Overall, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Raven’s Peak by Lincoln Cole doesn’t fail to delight the reader with a strong storyline that compels one forward on a smooth journey of fright and intrigue. I would recommend this book as a good afternoon read to those that enjoy the horror, action and thriller genres. At the same time, I also caution those who don’t like gory scenes on their shelves.
