Twins Ron and Bing Slaughter only planned to study for an important test (and maybe play some music). Instead, they suddenly find themselves chased by demons, and oh, did we mention the mortal danger? Ron, Bing and their friends Meat and Kaitlyn have to fight for their lives and battle a threat whose existence remains a secret to most of the world.
Let’s get one thing straight. How much you're going to like this book is very closely connected to your age. Young readers are bound to react more positively to it since they will be closer in age to the heroes. You might still enjoy the book even if you're older but only if you decide to accept the author’s rules and return to your childhood whilst reading.
Despite the presence of demons and supernatural threat, the book is surprisingly funny. Most of the jokes are based on the different characters of each hero. Kaitlyn is the smart one, for example, while Ron is impulsive and has the tendency to get into trouble. The unique characters of the main four youngsters make the book more interesting to read. Nobody likes it when every hero is the same. You don't have to worry about that in this case.
Unfortunately, the plot is nowhere as glorious. Sometimes it feels overly dramatic and so bizarre it stops being effective and starts to feel simply over-the-top. The pacing is unleveled and it takes a while before something truly interesting starts happening. I had to fight the urge to put the book down several times and not return to it again. Overall, it is missing a catch, an interesting plot point which would hook the reader for good and wouldn't let him go till he has finished the book.
Also, if you're a bit older and finished a lot of books, you will be able to easily predict what is going to happen next which takes the enjoyment out of the reading process. It sometimes seems that the story cannot decide what it wants to be – a comedy? A horror? Or a romance? As the plot progresses, it becomes less and less interesting and the story is concluded in a rather disappointing finale.
To sum it up, Demon Freaks have a catchy basic idea (kids vs. demons) and intriguing characters but have no idea what to do with them. If you're younger than fifteen or sixteen, you might enjoy the book as a one-time read. It doesn't read well enough though to become something better than below-average novel and therefore I can only rate this book 2 out of 4 stars.
