A satisfying read despite the gore and terror, Pablo Digenio shows us just how people dig their own graves in his series of short thriller stories entitled, You The People.
Despite not expecting a collection of short stories, while reading, the concept grew on me. Each story is just long enough to allow the reader to recuperate after such a scare/thrill. Each individual story proved very unpredictable, which is necessary in keeping the reader interested and satisfied.
This book is not for the feint of heart, those with a weak stomach, nor for children under the ages of 16. There is sexual and graphic content, as well as indecent language throughout each story. However, as most horrors, these features also contributed heavily to the thrill and the creepy aura surrounding the book. The author also included a hint of fantasy/mythical elements in some of the stories. It was not found to be too much, but just right, as only a hint of this element was incorporated.
A horror movie fanatic myself, this book is suited to any person who loves horror shows, puzzles or high levels of suspense. The author was careful to cover each story under a veil that keeps the juiciest part of each story hidden until the very best moment possible, playing heavily on the element of surprise. One is not able to put the whole story together unless you read each one to the very end. This is a favorable aspect to the book, as it keeps the interest of the reader, keeps them on their toes as they are never able to predict what comes next.
I must admit that one story was a little too much for me, but as mentioned, this book is not for the weak of heart. Each story is very descriptive and very graphic. Each ending was found to be severely satisfying, despite how shocking or terrifying it may be. However, this was found to be most enjoyable because not many stories give a reader that needed satisfying ending. Readers often merely adjust to the endings they are given. In this book, though unexpected, each ending fits perfectly.
There are a minimum of two grammatical errors throughout the entire book. Written in the third person narrative, the language and grammar used throughout each story is airy and easily understood, while still supporting the tone of suspense. There was not much that was found to be disliked within the book, except for the contents of one story which was found to be a little more disturbing than the rest. However, each person has a different variation/standard of what disturbing is and thus there is no true reason any horror fanatic would dislike this collection of short thrillers.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The book fulfilled its purpose as a thriller, and provides satisfying conclusions and answers all questions of each individual story.
