This is a book written by Darren Burch. The book TWISTED BUT TRUE contains 37 chapters, each revealing his childhood experience, childhood friends, marriage, family, divorce and his experience during the police service in Arizona.
The title is apt, and many of the stories are short except one story ‘SHOOT OUT.’ At the end of each story, he introduces ‘TWIST’, after-effect of the story. I feel readers will enjoy reading ‘TWIST’ to know the logical end of the story and ‘TWIST’ is relayed in no more than one or two short paragraphs.
These stories shed light on various aspects of life in Arizona particularly the police force of the city. The author has succeeded in embedding his personal life with his work in narrating these stories. He tries to make reader smile even in the midst of high voltage drama by unique way of naming the characters like ‘Mr Happy’, ‘Nolan Ryan’, ‘batboy’, ‘satan’, etc. You feel relaxed when you see a character of the story suddenly gets funny names. The author exhibits his mastery over the language by well framed sentences and fantastic vocabulary. I have read several crime thrillers, but this book of police stories is entirely different one because of author’s unique way handling the crime episodes with a sense of humour. The author’s style of writing makes the book interesting to read. The vivid description of the characters, places and inside story of the police department make one read in anticipation and visualize the action in the mind. The reader will definitely end up with sufficient knowledge about the city, ARIZONA and its police force.
The stories cover day to day incidents like runaway child, accident involving four-car pile up, violent family fight, robbery attempt, chasing mad cow, biker bar incident, drunk driver, attack on the barn, welfare-check, shoot out, sexual assault, etc.
One story which captured my attention was ‘IT WAS VERY PROFESSIONAL.’In this, the reader can see author’s capability of telling a story of allegations of a crime in a simple and funny way. No doubt it was a professional work. The story portraying him as a savior was well brought out in ‘TWISTED METAL.’ The following paragraph in ‘NO MORE, MR NICE GUY’ sums up his sense of humour to the tilt.
“The open end of the beer bottle was concealed deep inside rectum, with the Budweiser label in prominent view. The image would have made for the perfect football game halftime commercial, if only buttocks was an ice chest.”
In the epilogue, the author summed up as to how he was motivated to write this book ‘TWISTED BUT TRUE’ based on all his experience in the police department.
The only sad part of the book is non- alignment of paragraphs in almost all pages and quite a number of blank pages. The writing is free of grammatical errors. As the author succeeded in combining crime story with humour, all type of readers can enjoy the reading of this book. Even though my mind favors for 4 stars out of 4, bad alignment of paragraphs restrict the rating to 3 out of 4 stars.
