Pancake money is a mystery novel that talks about the psychological effect that results from man’s exposure to different kinds of pain and how the resultant effects changes and moulds behaviours and thinking sometimes for the better or worse. It follows detective Ress and his partner Polo as they follow a trail of death that can only be the work of a psychopath and their effort to stop the killer before he commits another crime.

The book is interesting and educating with lots of humour especially from detective polo. It’s suspense-filled, very believable and easy to follow. The author took me to school and gave a very educating and captivating lesson on psychology and the subject pain. I thoroughly understood what the author was driving at when he tried to explain how pain could change a person for good or for bad and sometimes for good and for bad. I also caught on to the subject of fear. The realisation that there is a psychological condition that causes fear of the outside world and the idea that it could be developed at such an early stage like with detective Ress daughter is scary and eye-opening. The way he touched and painted each character and their battle with pain, the struggle, the sheer madness and how it moulds into action is quite captivating. I like that pain and its effect wasn’t only limited to the villain of the book.

I recommend the book to mystery lovers and anyone who has a great love for educative books. I also recommend to those who like psychology and would love to understand the subject “pain”. I also recommend Pancake money to anyone who wants to visit Venezuela and wants a little backdrop on the people, culture and landscape of Venezuela. The author gave a lot of insight in the ''slightly biased mostly true thing'' chapter of the book. I recommend pancake money to adults and teens. However early teens are excluded from this group and mid-teens should only be allowed to read the book after parental review and approval as some of the content maybe gruesome and disturbing to a teenage mind.

I rate Pancake money 3 out of 4 star. I really like the story-line of the book a lot and I didn’t get lost at any point while reading the story. I always felt the killer was a priest but was only surprised that father black wasn’t somehow mixed up in the killings. I am also impressed by the level of research the author put into the book.

The editing of the book was quite impressive, even though there were still a few errors here and there like “a women at the front of the class”. I enjoy when the title of a book doesn’t give away the content, in my opinion, it adds to the thrill. Pancake money is definitely one of those books you can read more than once.
