Pancake Money is a book about a detective who hails from Dunedin in New Zealand. The story starts off on a grisly murder that has just taken place. The victim is a retired Catholic priest. What starts off as just another homicide in the neighborhood takes one on a brutal and grotesque siries of similar murders and before the week is over, bodies have piled up one after the other.
Detective Bobby Ress and his partner, detective Pollo, are the two lead detectives in this case of very disturbing and horrific murders taking place in one of the most thrilling and captivating, albeit gory story. The two partners do a good job of trying to balance between their jobs and their families, which goes to show how difficult this can get especially when you consider that in the end, things don't end that well for Bobby's partner Pollo. This is a book laced with action from the beginning and keeps at this pace all the way till the end. It's a story of events that will keep you in suspense and glued to the pages as you will want to know what will happen next.
Finn, knicknamed 'Little bird' is a special needs kind of kid who was born with an issue in his brain and due to this, he doesn't talk. He is also Jones Maihi's son. Jones Maihi is a convicted felon and a fugitive being hunted by the police for assaulting two police officers and, escaping while he was allowed to attend the funeral of his other son, Aroha. That a kid who can't talk, but likes taking pictures of people, especially happy, smiling people makes him to hold one of the most crucial evidence that wil give this case a twist that one would have least expected, is, a truly ingenious touch by the author and, the best way of finding out how this plays out is by reading the book.
I like how the author goes in tandem to write about the Maori people and their culture, which they still treasure to this day. He also describes how Dunedin in New Zealand is home to one of the most ancient sites in the world which makes one yearn to tour the country and visit some of those sites and experience the history of the place in person. I also liked how the book is well written and professionally edited to which, I only noted not more than three typos and errors. This is a truly fantastic job by the editor and, I couldn't point out any other thing that would make one not to love the book. It's a true masterpiece.
The story makes one to start questioning Mankind's role and purpose on Earth and also how we are supposed to co-exist with those around us. It makes one wonder what is the most important aspect of life between your beliefs, realities of life and also your family as well. People who don't like violence or very terriffying stories will have an issue with some of the scenes described in this book. Other than that, I can clearly and categorically say that this is one of the best books I have been able to read in a while and, as such, I give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.
