Pancake Money is an amazing mystery/thriller book. Finn Bells’ writing is excellent, the book is easy to read and keeps you turning the pages as he draws you in to the lives of his very believable characters. I like the authors' style of writing; it’s believable and entertaining. I’ll definitely keep reading Finn Bell.
In the book, Bobby Ress and Pollo are cops trying to solve the extremely gruesome murders of some local priests, but they’re not getting very far with it. They realize early on that whoever did these horrible crimes is way ahead of them in the murder game. As partners, they make a great team and I like seeing them interact. The story stays suspenseful right up to the very end. I wouldn’t say it’s an edge of your chair type suspense, but it’s nevertheless very entertaining.
Bobby loves his work as a cop, but he’s getting worn out by all the stress and living on the edge, and his family life is suffering. His wife Em struggles to support her husband in his work; she does understand his need to continue, and she’s always there for him. In part because of her support he carries on. He believes his work is his calling and he’s driven to see it through and find the priest killer, or killers. His partner Pollo is a native New Zealander and familiar with all the ways of the tribes that live off the land and that may be involved in the crimes.
The priest murders and extremely grotesque and I found them difficult to read, but I liked the fact that Bobby and Pollo are determined to solve them. The lives of the native people of New Zealand are interwoven throughout the book and give readers a look into a very different and interesting culture. The characters in the story are complex but Finn Bell portrays them well.
I enjoyed learning about the way of life and the customs of the native people of New Zealand; it sounds like an exciting place to go for an adventure. Finn Bell created a truly thrilling story that held my interest. Anyone who likes a good detective whodunit will love this book. If you don’t like reading crime stories, especially grisly ones, you won’t like this book. I give Pancake Money 4 out of 4 stars because both the writing and the story line are excellent. The plot is easy to follow, and the characters are very likeable. All in all, this book is a great read.
