Toxic Side Effect kept me hooked from the first sentence; it’s a real page turner. I can see myself curled up in front of a warm fire or stretched out on a sun-warmed beach reading this entertaining whodunit. The story begins when Jennifer’s father dies suddenly in front of her mother’s eyes. It’s determined that he has been poisoned and his wife, Audrey, is the main suspect.
This throws Jennifer into a panic; but serves as a vehicle for her to examine her mother’s life, her own life and her parent’s marriage as she works her way through the emotional maze her father’s sudden death has thrown her into. In the meantime, she must help her mother stay sane through the tortuous criminal investigation. Jennifer’s father has carried on an affair for the last thirty years, with his family’s knowledge and through the years, Jennifer has grown to hate Maureen, the other woman. She confronts her anger at Maureen, at the same time wondering why her mother put up with her father’s affair for so long.
Toxic Side Effect[/i] is as much a whodunit as an examination of three women’s lives. Jen examines her life as she works at finding out who poisoned her father; finding out her mother is the main suspect launches her into an emotional maze that she struggles to find her way out of. The book is well written and provides ‘edge of your chair’ entertainment; it’s even funny at times. I thought the over use of the f bomb was unbecoming to the main characters speech and there were a few grammatical errors, but all told, less than five.
Overall, I give the book 4 out of 4 stars; it’s well written and rings true. I liked that the fast pace of the story kept me guessing right up to the surprising end. I found the book thought-provoking and fun to read. What I liked least was the salty language, specifically the use of the f bomb; I felt it dragged the story down and was unnecessary.
Anyone who likes a fast-paced whodunit that you can read in a few hours will like this book. But if you are looking for a long, drawn out story with many twists and turns, this book may not be for you.
I also like the way the relationships between the women in the novel meshed together, and that each woman learned something about her own life through this tragic situation. The book makes a statement about just how damaging and far-reaching an extramarital affair can be, and that’s a vital issue that bears examination.
