Review of Kyd's Game
Kyd's Game by Marc Rosenberg is a thrilling tale of a former CIA officer on a dangerous mission in Russia to retrieve an object that could potentially compromise the reelection of the current Russian president, Garin. Neil Kyd’s retirement, living on a farm with his sick daughter, wasn’t full of roses. He had lost his wife to breast cancer, and now his daughter was struck with a potentially incurable disease with a grim prognosis. When federal agents approached Kyd with a promising cure for his daughter’s disease in exchange for a high-stakes mission in Russia, Kyd saw in this a golden opportunity for Molly, his daughter. Evidence of President Garin’s abetting the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime during the Syrian civil war was missing somewhere in Russia, potentially in the hands of President Garin’s opponents. Kyd’s mission is to find and retrieve this evidence and return it to the U.S at all costs. With President Garin’s armed forces, hell-bent on laying hands on this evidence, Kyd’s days in Russia promise to be fraught with chaos, violent confrontations and tight deadlines.
One of the enchanting attributes of this book is the author’s captivating narrative style. The author’s choice of words and relevant content created a consistently engaging and impassioned narrative that heavily focused on the motivations of this book's characters. The characters of this book were well-developed and relatable. I also loved how elaborate the plot of this book is; not one-dimensional and predictable, but intricate and full of characters with double personalities and motivations, creating a highly dynamic storyline. Although most of the story of this book unfolds in Russia and occasionally portrays the dark side of the Russian government, I commend the author for not making this book’s story and message overly political.
This book deserves a five-star rating for its polished editing, which improved my reading experience; the author’s engaging narrative style; a great assortment of relatable characters with often conflicting motivations; and an elaborate plot filled with suspense. The absence of any overt political bias from the author is another plus for me. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this book. This book contains many instances of non-borderline profanity, lightly sexual scenes and moderately violent content. I recommend this book to readers of all religions.
