Raven's Peak by Lincoln Cole is the first book in the series, World on Fire. In this evil-hunting thriller, the action starts immediately in the prologue with the introduction of a twisted, mysterious character called The Reverend, who is called upon by an old friend to find some missing girls taken by 'it'.

The prologue is a tantalising foreshadow of the course the rest of the novel will take. Without feeling cliched, Lincoln Cole takes the reader on a narrow path into the world of demons and their hunters, following Haatim, suffering through his powerlessness at preventing the death of his sister from cancer, and Abigail, a hunter on the out with The Council after temporarily being possessed against her will by a demon.

Haatim is introduced to this hidden underworld when approached by a stranger, George, in a library. George feels he is being stalked and asks Haatim to follow him and gather evidence, Introducing Abigail as the stalker in this scenario. Little does Haatim know that this easy money is bait and he is in mortal danger. Things take a twist when Abigail confronts him about the photographs he has taken and finds a mark on his arm causing a desperate flight from Haatim's apartment.

This book was gripping. I was completely involved from the start and did not want to stop reading. When I got to the end, I was more than ready to read the next book in the series.

This book works because the main characters are limited and focused. It does not zoom off into too much history and spiritual information but gives just enough to keep the story moving and credible. Also, the personalities and motivations of the main characters are well developed and believable.

This author is also just very good at writing. I got real pleasure from reading this book. Each chapter had details I was hungry for or action that kept me completely engaged.

There was not much to dislike about this book. I suspect most of the details I am left wanting, such as what channeling is, will be explained in future books in the series. It seemed a bit short and some of the backstory could have been explained further by Abigail. It is skimpy on the details around both her history before being liberated from the cult and also The Council and its workings.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. With some fleshing out on the history before this segment in the series it would be a 4-star book.
