Noah Bond has written an attention-grabbing mystery/suspense novel starring Kay, an intelligent graduate student whose life revolves around her research. Kay’s simple life is about to change when the death of a family member pits her against her wealthy cousins. In order to receive the substantial inheritance, she has one month to prove that she is married. This brief timeframe may be easily fulfilled for someone already in a serious, long-term relationship. However, how does a single, self-described nerd who rarely socializes meet and marry within a month?

Enter Grace, the hardworking lawyer struggling to keep the doors of her practice open. Suggested by the lawyer handling the will, Grace’s state of affairs taints one’s perception of her ability as a lawyer.

Kay’s potential case intrigues Grace as she is shocked by the inheritance “proven” marriage clause. Grace decidedly wants to represent Kay; however, the question of payment for a retainer as well as subsequent lawyer fees is an issue. Kay smartly suggests an unorthodox payment structure for Grace’s fees: a percentage of the final inheritance payment.

Kay’s introduction focuses on her book smarts as she is introduced as a graduate student. However, her smarts extend far beyond academics upon further reading. It was truly a pleasure to follow Noah’s artful development of Kay’s character and her interactions with other key players through the book. The reader is engrossed in a journey beginning with seemingly harmless yet duplicitous tactics exponentially evolving into death.

The minor grammatical errors kept me from giving this book a perfect 5-star rating. There is some profanity and sexual references, but no sexual content in the book. Readers that enjoy gripping fiction that thoroughly engages the reader and provides a bit of mystery and suspense will absolutely enjoy this novel. Readers that prefer a more casual, relaxing read will not enjoy this fast-paced page-turner.

This is the first Noah Bond book that I have read and will definitely not be the last. I was immediately drawn into the story, with the suspense propelling me towards the shocking end. The characters were well developed with a masterful storyline. If I were simply reading this book for enjoyment, without the critical editing eye, this book would be a five-star read!
