The book introduces us to the supernatural world of demons. In the prologue, we see Arthur a demon hunter imprisoned voluntarily for the atrocities he committed during his hunting days that he cannot forgive himself for. In Prison, he punishes himself by thrashing himself to atone for his sins. Frieda a member of the council of Chaldea and also his ex-wife approaches him and asks for help to free Abigail his adopted daughter who has been possessed by a powerful demon. Arthur accepts to save Abigail knowing well enough that he might not make it back alive, and during the exorcism, he is taken by the demon. When Abigail learns that Arthur saved her life, she swears to find, and bring him back.
Abigail hunts demons to redeem herself in the eyes of the council as she lost their trust in her after she got possessed. She meets Haatim who is unemployed, depressed, and not sure about life. Haatim gets contracted by a stranger who is also a demon, that wants to use him to spy, and take pictures of Abigail, but also wants to Possess Haatims’ body to enrage the council since Haatim is the son to Aram Malhotra a notorious council member. Haatim is exposed to the supernatural world when Abigail saves him from demons that wanted to use his body to bring back their demon boss. Abigail goes to Raven’s Peak with Haatim so she can be able to protect him and at the same time to check out the remote town for any unnatural happenings. While there they find and fight Belphegor a very powerful demon who causes anarchy, distrust, and destruction among people.
The way the author introduces us to the supernatural world of demons is so amazing since the only way I knew about demons at first is through religious teachings, and that they can only be exorcised by priests, however, that is not the case with Coles "Raven’s peak." Here all it takes is training, a strong mind, and determination to become a hunter like Abigail, and battle demons.I like knowing that out there is a secret society that is protecting us from evil supernatural beings as in the book. In relating this book to the real world, people are afraid of what they don’t know, a mere whisper of the possibility of something extraordinary out there would put people in a panic.
Haatims courage, how he stands up to his father when the council declared to burn Ravens Peak down is refreshing in the development of his character. He demonstrates courage when he asks for more time to save the people of Ravens Peak, and together with Abigail, they pull off the impossible. Also, Abigail shows extraordinary courage in doing her best to face off with Belphegor even though she has never faced such a powerful demon before, even when the council doesn’t trust her. Am touched by her act of valor to sacrifice herself to save the people of Ravens Peak. The theme of this book is evil versus good and good won in the end.
The authors' use of suspense is captivating it makes me hooked on the book especially when Abigail faces off with the demon Belphegor. There are tension, and anticipation that builds up from whether Abigail will give in to Belphegors’ demands in exchange to free Arthur which is a big temptation considering the fact that Abigail wants Arthur back badly.
I dislike the way the council loses trust in Abigail just because she had the bad luck to get possessed during her hunting job since hunting demons is the day to day job of hunters, it is bound to have its hazards like getting possessed by the same demons your fighting. This should not be held against her as it's not her liking. I understand the council has to make hard decisions to protect the world but between exorcising Belphegor and giving the people of Ravens peak a chance at survival, it seems to me they took the easiest way out of declaring to burn Raven’s Peak which is not having faith in people is a weakness.
I give this book 3 out of 4. It was enjoyable and keeps you hooked for more, it’s like it ends when you are still expecting more only to alert you to a book two which you would want to start on right away to know how things end up. To people who enjoy supernatural, fantasy thrillers, detective, and conspiracy theories, this is a must-read.
