The novel Final Notice by Van Fleisher is a fictional story about a doctor that creates a smart watch called the VT2 that is able to monitor the user’s health and predict their death. The book is in the political thriller genre.

The novel begins by posing the question, "What would you do if you had one week to live?" The book contains a series of murders and a suicide that are precipitated by the "Final Notice" given by the VT2 watch. The VT2 monitors vital signs, changes in blood and other bodily functions to predict a person’s death within 30 days. Once the person reaches the one-week time frame of dying, the VT2 informs the person of their imminent death, so they have the time to get their affairs in order. This information means different things to different people with some people choosing to enact revenge on their enemies or take their own life.

The book tells the story of the writer’s opinion of America’s obsession with guns. The book is highly critical of the NRA and their hold on politicians and their ability to sway any potential legislation for gun control. The book also has a high level of criticism of America’s treatment of senior citizens and the profiling of immigrants in this nation. The other idea that is very interesting in this book is the criticism of the current White House administration and the propaganda surrounding the idea of fake news and the distrust this has created for the media within America.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. This novel was very strongly opinionated towards the left more liberal view of social politics. I personally do not have any issue with that view, but the writer’s opinion was so forced on the reader that it was overdone in my opinion. There were parts of the book that were very slow-paced and seemed to drag on unnecessarily. The topic of gun control is a very hot topic in politics today, so I think the novel is very timely and certainly presents a view held by portions of our society in America. The book really made me think about gun control laws and how ineffective they appear to be. I think the book makes the reader think about the age-old question, do we protect society by giving more people guns, or do we protect society by getting rid of guns? I like the idea of exploring the way people handle news of their mortality and what they do choose to do with those precious last few days.

In summary, I think the book would appeal to readers who are open to discussing a liberal view of gun control and social politics. I think readers who are conservative or anti-gun control may not be able to read this book without getting upset. Overall, there are some valid points discussed in the reading and the book was strongly written.
