Twisted Threads by Kaylin McFarren is the fourth book on the Threads series and has a crime/mystery/romance genre. Eventhough it is the fourth book in the series, there is no need to read the first three because it is a stand alone book.

The story revolves around Akira Hamada, a Japanese assassin who has to do one last job to free herself from the ominous organization who killed her loved ones and made her do despicable things. Akira's last job is to find the murderer of their boss' sister which happens to be in a ship cruise hosted for rich and prominent people. There she meets the suspects and successfully enters herself into their circle through Devon Lyons, a dashing debonair that fell easily for the sweet and naive cover of Akira. They had some fun days at the cruise until mysterious murders happened and they find themselves questioning each and every passenger of the ship, including those closest to them.

Mostly, I liked the book because there were no unnecessary scenes that sometimes ruins the mood for the story. Also, there were no giving of too much description of the place, characters or happenings, just enough for the story. It was fast paced without giving off the feeling that it is being rushed and the writing was very easy understand, even new readers would enjoy it. Overall, I enjoyed because it was not too heavy and a breath of fresh air for me.

However, because the story was told on a fast paced way and was not that heavy, I think it contributed to not meeting my expectations. I love reading and watching romantic mysteries so I was very ecxcited to read this book. I was expecting to be transported into the life of a female Japanese assassin who ventures into a luxurious ship cruise, both of which I love the idea of, instead I did not feel that Akira is an assassin and the action that should have been developing inside the cruise was not explored well. I was trying to find that action/mystery aspect but it did not happen for me until the end of the book. It's like the characters lacked life and the main characters lacked chemistry altogether, or it could also be that the plot, setting and characters did not mix well together. I'm not too sure as well. I just disliked the fact that I did not get to connect with them to properly appreciate the story.

The plot could have a been a lot bigger. The characters should have been given certain times to shine, whether it be in the actiion aspect or romance aspect. There were a lot of unanswered questions and vague stories, especially at the end and that did not sit well with me. Overall, I liked the book beacuse it was direct to point and easy to read, but I think that contributed also to the reasons why I did not like it.

I give this book a 2 out of 4 stars rating because I was a little disappointed about it lacking on the mystery and action aspect. The romance was there, but I really did not feel both Akira and Devon being alive. I felt they could have been better maybe given another plot and setting where they can be developed; both their characters and relationships. I expected it to be a page turner; I even told myself that I could finish it in one day, but I did not, certainly because of the issues I have said before. There were also some typos and some grammatical errors, but there were just one or two of them that did not ruin the whole reading experience for me.

Finally, I did not give this book a low rating because I hated it. I finished the book but technically we were not that compatible. I would not recommend this to readers like me, who wants mind boggling mysteries that keeps you thinking and makes you doubt each character throughout the whole story. This is not for you, but you can always give it a try. For people who loves a good, light read on finding a murderer in a ship cruise and having romantic scenes between two good looking people, this could be for you. Just be ready with the bloody scenes, because there are some.

I could say that Kaylin McFarren is a good writer despite this, being the first time I have read her work and it is her fourth one in a series, so I would definitely read her other works despite me being a little disappointed with Twisted Threads.
