Twisted Thread, written by Kaylin McFarren, is an action-packed, romantic thriller which was staged on a cruise ship.

The story took place on a Caribbean cruise ship, where people of all sorts were on board. Akira, a geisha-turned assassin, was one of the passengers who was assigned by the Japanese notorious Zakura-kai to identify and assassinate the murderer of the crime lord’s sister, Keiko. With hundreds of passengers and crew members aboard, Akira was lucky enough to track down her potential candidates who were responsible for the death of Keiko. Furthermore, she was able to meet Devon Lyons, her escape route if she failed to fulfill the mission. However, a string of mysterious deaths had emerged, and the killer was on the loose. The relaxing trip on a cruise ship was turned into a nightmare with no escapes.

Although Twisted Thread is part of the thread series written by Kaylin McFarren, however it could stand alone on its own. After reading this story, it makes me want to read the whole series to learn about the story happened before and after this story. The author had successfully constructed great characters with backstories and motifs in what they are doing. This makes the reader want to know more about the characters and what would happen to them. Furthermore, Kaylin McFarren had given each of the characters unique personalities to tell them apart from the others. Every character holds their own secrets, and they may not be the one they seemed to be. These details allow the readers to be involved in making assumptions about the identity of the murderer of Keiko and the killer who committed crimes on the cruise. In addition, the emotion and the nature of a character may shift in accordance with the event occurred. It is amazing to learn about how these little details were taken care in this fiction. I personally was impressed with the details that were given out in this story, from all those plays happening in the heart to the metaphor of one’s words, the author had them all covered.

The flow of the story was smooth, and the rhythm of the story was well kept, which encourage the readers to find out more about the story by reading on. Furthermore, the author not only encouraging the reader to keep reading on, but also to take note of the details given, by letting out some clue on how the story will unfold in the early stage. The story conformed to the title because the story is indeed twisted. There was a twist in each corner of the story and some unexpected event happens to stir the situation. Other than that, the author gave out sufficient details to allow her reader to immerse into the story but reserved adequate information to withhold the identity of the killer. It is also satisfying that the author does give out all the answers to all the foreshadowing made previously.

I’ll rate this book three out of four stars. This story left a very good impression and I personally had the obsessed with the style of the author. I am looking forward to getting my hands on the other books written by the author, especially the other books of the thread series. The reason for giving three stars instead of four is due to a personal reason that I personally prefer a more twisted ending. The author had demonstrated her excellent observation skills by providing lots of details in this story, which allowed the reader to immerse into the world she had created. Other than that, the story is filled with incidents and twist which keeps the reader hooked on to the story. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy mysteries with a little bit of romance. In conclusion, this is a romantic, action-packed thriller, which was well written.
