In Lieu of Flowers by Keith Steinbaum is a story based on incidents that occurred in the life of the author’s grandfather. It is a book with elements of good versus evil, strength after significant loss, and the power of kindness. I liked many of the characters in this book. Most of them are ordinary people whose lives are changed by extraordinary events.

Although the story begins in Romania, most of the book happens in Los Angeles. Terrence is the main character. He is an African American married to Juana, a Mexican American. The author uses diversified cultures and instances of discrimination, except where evil occurs. A demon appears in the Romanian part of the story. The demon does not discriminate but is wicked toward anyone he encounters.

The easy flow of the story and smooth writing make this book a delight to read. As I stated earlier, the characters are likable, and Terrence was one that I could not help but respect. He is sympathetic, kind, gentle, easy-going, and a devoted husband. The people who make up his circle of friends exhibit the same qualities. They are not perfect and therefore are believable. These characters may be homeless, disabled, young, co-workers, or strangers he helps. The one unifying element is that Terrence and his friends are good people. The virtue of goodness competes with the evil actions of the demon.

I give In Lieu of Flowers a rating of 5 out of 5 because of the fine composition and interesting story. The author defines characters in appearance and behavior so the reader can easily picture the people and activity. The subject matter may not be to everyone's taste. Not everyone believes in the existence of evil or demons. Those readers will enjoy the thriller aspect of the book. I recommend In Lieu of Flowers.
