How far would you be willing to go for love? At what point does someone's love turn bad or dangerous? In Murder Among Friends, author Linda Burson explores the complex nature of love and infatuation.

This crime fiction book follows the woes of PI Cammy Thurston in work and in her personal love life. Tired of trying to climb the ladder in the advertising industry, Cammy serendipitously runs into a private investigator who decides to give her a chance. She discovers she enjoys the work and is actually pretty good at it.

It isn't until Cammy decides to take some time off after a bad break-up, that her work hits close to home. When she goes to stay with her police officer brother to rest and heal, she befriends a playmate of her niece and nephew, Austin. Austin's mother goes missing and Cammy strikes up a romance with Austin's father, Grant, while trying to help her brother solve the case of the murdered wife. As she unravels the mystery, the reader learns there is always more than meets the eye where the relationships between the characters in this book are concerned.

What I liked most about this book was that it kept me guessing. The twist was quite unexpected and left me reeling enough to have to go back and read it again to find the clues I missed the first time. I also enjoyed the author’s exploration of love and all the different ways people choose to allow love and infatuation influence their decisions in life. Burson shows the dark and dangerous sides to love and juxtaposes them with the pure and innocent kind of love, effectively showcasing the complex nature of the emotion.

However, there were parts of the story that felt a little far-fetched, namely how the authorities handled the missing person/murder case of Grant’s wife. That, along with the grammar errors throughout the book, is why I would rate this book three out of five stars. It was a fun read and I ultimately enjoyed it.

There are several mild sex scenes throughout the book, so I would recommend this book to an adult audience that enjoys crime and romance
