Review of Even A Pandemic Can't Stop Love and Murder (Volume One of Paying the Price Series)
4/5
”Even A Pandemic Can't Stop Love and Murder (Volume One of Paying the Price Series)” , by A.E.S. O'Neill is set in southern New Jersey. Alby O’brien lives a very minimalistic life, going to great lengths to avoid bringing any attention to himself. Struggling to forget past events that haunt him, and hiding from the demons he’s left behind. He does various fix it jobs, and hires others to do more risky tasks like asbestos removal at the bank. His quiet existence is disrupted when the bank is robbed.
Alby has a horrifying awakening when he realizes the bank is owned by the mob and they’ve sent their specialist to clean up the mess. Jagger is the specialist hired by the mob to clean up their messes. Efficient, capable and extremely dangerous. He is now on the hunt to find the culprit, putting everyone between him and the thief in peril.
Meanwhile Alby meets Ginger, a quirky but straightforward woman who piques his interest. Ginger although drawn to him can’t seem to figure him out. Caught up in the web of chaos, Alby has to race to put things right before anyone gets hurt, or word of his location slips to the monsters he hides from.
I genuinely enjoyed this story. Although I got off to a slow start due to some unclear parts of the story, these elements became clearer as story progressed. Overall, the unfolding events, storyline, and growth of the characters drew me in, making the book an engaging read.
It would have been more enjoyable for me in the beginning adequate details were given about the health and safety hazards of the bank job, and the reasoning for the protagonist hiring from where he did. I think this would have drawn me into the story earlier because I would’ve understood what was happening and why it was happening.
That being said once I understood what was happening in the story I was hooked. I especially enjoyed the range of different characters in the story and how they built as the story progressed. I also enjoyed watching the story unfold from each character’s point of view. I was genuinely entertained by the dialogue between characters, especially Alby and Ginger. The Author excels in showing the characters emotions through actions and interactions. From lighthearted humor, to frustration and even depression and anxiety at times throughout the story.
If you like reading books that have characters navigating life threatening situations while also dealing with a budding romance, this book will definitely interest you. I recommend this book to adult audiences interested in books that have a mixture of crime, danger and romance.
I rate this book a 4 out of 5 because of its engaging storyline, character growth and entertaining dialogue. While the book starts off with some unclear details in the beginning, all becomes clear as the story builds.
