Dubbed a romantic suspense novel, The Aviculturist by Ann Smythe is a wonderful story of familial bonds, death and grief, and the cloud of suspense that surrounds it all. The Aviculturist is a heart-warming tale of family, mystery, and strength as well. The author has done a remarkable job in terms of plot and character development.

The plot of The Aviculturist involves Lily, an artist by profession. She returns to her childhood home and family estate in Cornwall after years of distance, both physical and mental. Lily possesses great strength and resilience, as she has endured and risen above the pain of losing her father and sister in the same place years ago. The author perfectly depicts the struggles of both the past and present as Lily relives the tragic incident of 1971 while also getting her childhood home ready for sale.

Being a dual-plot story, the reader might need a minute to comprehend the path of both storylines, but it is interesting to read. The second plot involves Marcus, the town's pub landlord, who is battling the grief and confusion of his daughter's death in a motorcycle accident a few years ago. It is his determined quest to figure out the intricacies of her untimely demise for which he tries his best.

I loved Lily's character; she kept herself calm and composed while her life turned upside down. She was resilient and intelligent in the face of all kinds of adversities, which is an amazing thing to be. She also has a soft heart and vibe, reflected in her love and connection with all kinds of animals. Furthermore, the story was flawlessly written and well-edited as well.

I'd rate this book a solid 5 out of 5 stars , for there was nothing to dislike at all. The writing was smooth, with no grammatical or editing errors. The characters did justice to their roles, and it was all well executed.
