House of Cuts by June Gillam was quite the adventure! I enjoyed reading it from the beginning because of how quickly the book escalated. I am a big fan of the horror/gore and mystery genres, this book was the perfect blend of both. June’s ability to describe the murder scenes with the right amount of detail without scaring off the reader and leaving them wanting more is phenomenal. I dare say even those who do not care much for blood and gore would enjoy reading this book. It was masterfully written to dispense the right amount of detail to not deter the reader from finishing this book, and what a shame that would be!

I enjoyed the side action between the reporter Hillary Broome and the lead detective Ed Kiffin. It was a sweet little distraction that hopefully blooms into something more. I enjoyed how the story was set up and written. I loved how each chapter was based around one character at a time and even gave insight from the murderer even though it wasn’t immediately obvious who it was. I also enjoyed the setting. The geographical area the book was set in seems like a peaceful little getaway with Hillary staying in a cottage and enjoying her nature runs in the morning.

Hillary was my favorite character just because she was relatable and courageous; taking justice into her own hands by searching for the clues (body parts) left by the murderer, who was trying to teach the public that Price Cuts was evil and trying to cut out the competition, small businesses. I thought the gory details were great, especially when the author described how John Stoney was murdered and how his body was put on display for the whole store to see.

I feel like the ending was great and didn’t feel rushed. I found one error that I am not even sure is an error. Internet was capitalized on page 94 and there was some mild profanity, which is why I am rating this book a 4 out of 5 or 3 out of 4, whichever scale is used. I recommend this book to whoever is a fan of mystery and some gore. I wouldn’t go as far as to say it was a horror book, but it was such a good read. Sequel here I come!
