Raven's Peak opens with a bang as the well-executed fight scene between the legendary demon slayer, Arthur and a powerful unnamed demon plays out so intensely that it almost seems a bit realistic. Towards the end of the prologue, the little emotional scene thrown in there can really get to the reader.
Raven's Peak is the first book of the series World on Fire by Lincoln Cole. This story explores Abigail and Haatim's journey to demon-hunting and uncovering the truths about themselves and the people close to them.
Haatim is a modern and naive young man who runs a blog in his spare time. He's a college graduate but finds himself depressed and unemployed following the death of his sister. One day, a man offers him an interesting job. Desperate for any gigs, he then takes the job offer. As Haatim does his job, he runs into trouble and meets a woman who plays a big role in bringing him back to his supernatural roots -- which he never dreamed to be a part of. Abigail has been a demon hunter all her life. She's the perfect embodiment of a strong and independent woman who knows what she wants and will do everything for the people she loves. She had a dark past and she has vowed to herself that she will track down the demon who took her father figure, Arthur Vangeest.
As part of her mission, Abigail has to investigate a mysterious activity in a small town called Raven's Peak. Alongside her is Haatim. Two different people with trust issues journey Raven's Peak together and on their way to the small town, Haatim discovered some life-changing truths about his father and his part in Abigail's world.
This is an exciting and dark tale. The author writes in a way that hooks and engages the readers in. The world-building and narrative aspects of the book are also superb, making it a lot easier for the readers to picture the scenes and places in the story. I spotted a missing word error but it's super minor that it doesn't reduce the quality of the book. My main issue with the story is Haatim's character. Oftentimes, he acts so naive to the point that it can be irritating.
Overall, I've enjoyed this fast-paced novel which is why I give it a 4 out of 4 stars rating. I recommend this to those who love a great blend of fantasy and action.
