Twisted Threads by Kaylin McFarren is the fourth book in the Threads series. It is listed as a Crime/Thriller/Mystery/Horror, but I think I would call it more of an action-romance. While there is an emphasis on crime and a kind of murder mystery going on, the most prevalent tone is the erotic romance taking place between the main characters. The book is definitely for mature adults; there are graphic sexual scenes as well as very descriptive rape scenes. There is also some profanity throughout the novel.

The story begins with Akira, a trained-geisha-turned-yakuza-assassin, going undercover on a cruise ship to find the murderer of her boss’s sister. Her plan is to use her chosen mark, Devon, to get closer to his aunt and uncle and determine if they are the murderers, then take them out. Along the way, though, she develops real feelings for him, leaving her conflicted and questioning her role there. The pair is entangled in a twisted web, neither of them knowing how they will end up once the cruise is over.

Twisted Threads does not appear to be a direct continuation of the previous books in the Threads series. While this book could stand on its own, reading the previous books would give insight into characters and incidents that are mentioned in this book. Without having the previous books to reference to, the reader may be left feeling confused or like information is missing in a few key places.

Although there were a few small mistakes, mostly involving missing commas, the writing was very well done and had me reading on the edge of my seat. The story line gripped me, and I was completely invested in the book. The developing relationships between characters were exciting and realistic, and the characters themselves were very diverse in their personalities and backgrounds.

One thing that kind of disappointed me, though, was how quick the story was. Especially at the end, it felt like the author was trying to wrap up the book swiftly and neatly. After the culmination of the plot and final conflict, it was like it was just over. For example, an intense rape scene happened right before the final battle between the protagonist and the antagonist, and afterward, it was never addressed again. The characters went on without mentioning it again, like it hadn’t even happened. It just felt like there could have been a little more closure and a few more explanations to truly complete the book.

Overall, I am rating this book 4 out of 5 because of the unique and intriguing story the author created. I could tell McFarren put a lot of work into it.
