This is the review of the book titled Veterans Day-A Mary Jane Morris Mystery by J. J. Jorgens. The book starts with the reader’s comment—highly entertaining thriller. To start with, I feel quite contrary to the reader’s comment. ‘You won’t want to put it down’, was another reader’s comment. According to me, there were several instances while reading the book when I felt like discontinuing it. Since I appreciate the work of authors and understand the talent involved in scripting a novel, I went through till the last. However, I would really appreciate if other readers feel the other way.
The book revolves around the protagonist, Ms. Mary Jane Morris who is a private investigator. The death of her ex-partner leads her to become the prime suspect in the world of corrupt politicians. Her investigation brings out several secrets in the management of Veterans Administration.
The protagonist, Mary Jane, was helpful, kind and curious in nature. Her curiosity and inquisitive nature make her a good investigator. According to her, Davy was also a good man and a better investigator, which later got him murdered. This fact was the cause of concern for Mary Jane. Davy believed a lot in the cause of veterans. His struggle to get the proper healthcare for the veterans helped him to make many enemies, like the Mayor and friends, like Charles and Sergeant Big. There were many high-profile people of the city involved in the plot such as Harris the developer, Koch the money man, Senator Huntingdon the political deal maker, Loudon the inside VA official, the Mayor, and Rodriguez the supplies expert. The illicit relationship between Harris and the mayor’s wife provides a good motive to Mary Jane for investigating the murder. The solving of the mystery of Davy’s death changes the life of Mary Jane forever, putting her investigative career into question. However, the novel does not end as a cliff-hanger, which I feel is a good thing as I always get discouraged with such endings.
The novel was well plotted but had a lot of grammatical and punctuation error. The plantation and Halloween chapters had a lot of grammatical errors which made the understanding of the thoughts a little difficult. In addition, the flow of the book was not good in most of the chapters. In most of the chapters, the difference between thinking and conversing was not distinguishable which decreased the quality of the read. This could be experienced in the chapter titled Suspect.
However, the plot and the intermittent adventures by the characters kept me engaged such as the impromptu trip to muddy hallows. It was a much-needed refreshment in the midst of the investigation which had led to a chaos of thoughts. The presence of Mary Jane’s boyfriend, Lorenzo also added a romantic angle to the story. He was possessive in nature, possibly due to his failed marriage.
If the reader is interested in plots relating to politics, money laundering, and crime, this book will be a disappointment in the sense of the flow of the story, albeit a good plot. In my view, the author could have done better. This is the reason I am giving the book 2 out of 4 stars.
