Review of The Law of Unintended Consequences
The Law of Unintended Consequences by Mike D. Peek is a suspense thriller novel full of mystery, drama, and controversies. There’s crime; there’s love and betrayal. This is unrequited love, and there are so many surprises. The story starts with the good guy, Mike Murray, and his best friend, Kadir Bakerman, who are former football players. They live a rich life full of expensive cars, beautiful villas, beautiful women who throw themselves at them, and diamonds. The actual plot starts when Shorena, Bakerman’s wife, gets murdered at her place along with another man. From the looks of it, there was someone else at the crime scene at the time of the murder. Kadir is unconsolable and grieving, and he becomes the prime suspect. What will Mike do to save his friend?. That’s the gist of the story.
Snyder, the lead detective, was in love with Shorena. He responded to her distress call once, which involved Kadir. This instance solidifies his biased opinion of Kadir, leading to so many twists in the story. Evidence is also unfortunately pointing towards Kadir. What about Mike? Was Shorena involved with someone else? Is this a murder of revenge or passion? There are so many characters involved in the plot. Each gets revealed at the right time, adding only to the never-ending question: Who killed Shorena?.
The novel was fast-paced, which I immensely enjoyed. There is a cop who believes every guy of color is a criminal. There are officers who are supposed to be responsible but make mistakes. This results in innocent people getting hurt. The character of Snyder is most notable for being biased towards Kadir, labeling him the culprit even without gathering evidence. There are no unnecessary scenes anywhere. The author has kept the plot crisp. I really enjoyed reading the detailed way he described every scene.
There are certain issues with the novel. The number of grammatical errors is alarming, but they do not distract from the story, so that was excusable. The language in dialogues also feels unstructured, but one will get used to it. If the reader can adjust to the story-telling style, it is a very good, nerve-wracking story, which I enjoyed very much.
For the unprofessional editing, I am giving The Law of Unintended Consequences by Mike D. Peek a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. I do not have any other complaints aside from the errors. This is a highly recommended read for those who enjoy crime novels with well-rounded characters and suspense until the last page.
