East Wind
by Jack Winnick

From a dramatic opening to an action-packed conclusion, East Wind holds the reader’s attention. Author Jack Winnick takes the time to develop all the main characters with good backstories that help explain their motivation and thoughts.

Beginning with Uri, a skilled agent and an assassin with Mossad, we see what this job does to a person and their relationships. Seeing comrades die while killing his country’s enemies in a very up close and personal way, and then not having anyone to unburden himself to, leaves him hurt and grieving the loss of both his men and his marriage. His discovery of some scattered notes leads him into his next assignment with some resignation.

Lara, the FBI agent partnered with Uri, is intelligent and frustrated with her job. The Bureau dismissed her identification of potential imminent terrorist activity, and her major project monitoring electronic communications was taken from her and moved to the Department of Homeland Security.

Walid shows us the textbook grooming of a future terrorist. After listening to the very charismatic leader of Hezbollah, he joins the jihadist movement. He is carefully taught and guided in the belief that he is a holy warrior, and when the opportunity arises, Walid is assigned the task of striking the United States.

Stolen weapons-grade nuclear material and someone with the knowledge to use it provide the fear factor and tension for the rest of the book. In this, the second edition of East Wind, Winnick presents a well-edited, cohesive, and exciting story. The gradual buildup of the nuclear threat is done with sufficient detail and explanation so as not to bore or overwhelm the reader.

The premise is believable, the characters are relatable, and the story is enjoyable and well-written. I noticed only one grammatical error, and it does not detract from the story. I recommend this book for readers looking for an exciting tale reminiscent of Tom Clancy but with Winnick’s unique style. I give this novel five out of five stars.
