Uri and Lara come together in a stark, reality check on terrorism in this Jack Winnick thriller Devil in False colors .

The story takes flight in Los Angeles with a shocking, senseless and gruesome killing of young children at a Jewish daycare, followed by the murder of an outspoken local rabbi. This sets the stage for Lara, an American working for the Joint Terrorism Task Force, and her former lover Uri, a Mossad agent for Israel, to reconnect on a new adventure. I am giving this book a 5 out of 5-star review for the engaging storytelling.

This book is a timely read right now with tensions in the Middle East continuing to rise. With the help of this book, the reader will feel slightly more informed of how complex and longstanding the issues really are.

Lara and Uri quickly discover their passion and intimate connection has not diminished with time and separation. Their reuniting scene as a couple is tastefully described with no overt descriptions of the sexual encounter. The descriptions of some of actions of the terrorist are a bit shocking, but the graphic descriptions are necessary for the narrative to have meaning and purpose.

The author is clearly well informed on the Middle East and presents this glimpse into the thought processes of various sect leaders. This book is very informative and will leave you thinking about our current situation. Maybe it’s even a bit frightening. You will learn about terrorism and countermeasures, and about the two main branches of Islam, the Shia and Sunni. You will also hear about Hezbollah, ISIS and DAESH. Lebanon, Iran and Russia also play a role in this primer on the current state of terrorism and extremist threats. At times your head will be spinning with the acronyms. It is well worth it to read the authors note at the end of the book. In fact, it might be helpful to start there for some insight into the background if the topic is unfamiliar to you.

As a newly minted avid reader of Middle Eastern conflict and the resulting terrorism in the US, this book exceeded my expectations. I found myself unable to put this page turner down. Like watching a train wreck in slow motion, you knew disaster was coming. Lara and Uri had outstanding tenacity in their goal to thwart the terrible plot. I read the Kindle version and this book was also very well edited, with no typos noted.

My favorite part of the book was the refueling with the KC-135. My son-in-law flies one of those! I am a huge fan of the history of the KC-135 and how the refuelers have changed the history of military air warfare.

The only thing I did not love in this book was the graphic descriptions of death. I do think it was a necessary evil to convey the importance of what was happening.

This book is a great read and very contemporary to understanding some the issues going on in our world today.
