Review of Devil Among Us
Jack Winnick's "Devil Among Us" is the story of Lara and Uri, the main characters of his international spy thriller series. In the book, Laura, a U.S. FBI agent, and Uri, a Mossad field agent, work together to stop an attack on Israel that could start another World War. The story begins with an attack against a synagogue in the US by an undercover Muslim group set on destroying the Jews. Laura and Uri are instrumental in stopping a terrorist attack against Jews that could have started another World War. While working together in a previous novel, the two develop a blossoming romance that is rekindled in this novel.
This book is a page-turner that keeps the reader interested with the "what ifs." With current events in our world, things in this story could actually happen, and that is a scary fact of our times. Lara and Uri are both likable characters whom you, as a reader, would like to know in real life. Their strength of character, devotion to their countries, and faith in each other lead the reader to believe that good will conquer over the bad and renew hope for our world.
I did find parts of the book to be hard to follow. Winnick includes quite a bit of military terminology and phrases that are above my understanding. I am not familiar with the Jewish and Muslim religions and traditions. My lack of knowledge of these religions, their languages, and traditions also caused me to struggle with parts of the storyline. I found several mistakes that distract from the story and interrupt the understanding. The mistakes, mixed with the religious and military aspects, make this book a complicated read.
I would rate this book a 3 out of 4. The story is interesting and exciting. It holds the reader's attention and relates to the real world. I did find the military terminology hard to follow, which slowed my reading down and caused me to have to look things up as I read. I would give the book a 4 out of 5. The story is frightening in its reality. Anything could happen in our world, and this book touches on the "what ifs" and discusses the different outcomes that could have happened in the book. I enjoyed the relationship between Lara and Uri, which gave this book added depth. The mistakes I found were distracting enough to cause me to pause and reread for understanding. That, along with the military terminology that I did not understand, slowed my reading down and interrupted my understanding. I would recommend this book, with the understanding that prior knowledge of the military would be helpful.
