For most of the passengers vacationing on the ten-day cruise aboard the luxurious Starfish, the journey is little more than an occasion to relax, refresh, and enjoy the countless amenities along the way.

But for a select few, this cruise will have a far more sinister outcome. Two passengers have boarded with murder on their itineraries, and a mysterious “watcher” lurks in the shadows, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Romance will blossom, marriages will be tested, and no one on the ship is truly what they seem to be.

This is the backdrop for Kaylin McFarren’s novel, Twisted Threads. The fourth in her Threads series, McFarren revisits several characters that readers of the first three books will remember, as well as adding many more interesting individuals to the cast.

Twisted Threads, despite its location in the series, is billed as a stand-alone novel, and it holds up very well to that promise. Having not read the first three, I was pleasantly surprised to be able to follow along without the context of the previous stories. The characters and their relationships were complex but made clear to the reader regardless of his or her history with the Threads series. There were a few moments where connections between characters were unclear to me, but I claim full responsibility for my confusion, having come into this book with no knowledge of the rest of the series.

This book was a sexually charged, suspenseful thrill ride with plenty of unpredictability from the beginning to the end. It is also highly erotic in a handful of places, graphic in its detail of several romantic (and one more violent) sexual encounters.

I enjoyed the suspense and pace of Twisted Threads. Although I don’t naturally gravitate toward erotic fiction, I was pleased to find that the rest of the story was extremely well-done, and that this was not “just” an erotic novel. I would rate this book a 4 out of 5 and recommend it for those who enjoy the genre. I would also recommend reading the series as a whole as it will help with character recognition and, I believe, will help increase the tension in the story and connections between characters and plot points throughout.
