Soul Seeker, by Kaylin McFArren, is about Crighton Daemonium who arrives in the small town of Lochton, Illinois. Crighton is known as a soul-collector who is looking for more tainted and evil souls. Benjamin Poe, a firefighter for the small town, is doing battle to keep his family safe from this demon.
After Crighton tricks Poe into murdering his own son, he is then kidnapped by The Sovereign Sector, scientists who experiment on paranormal creatures. While contained, he meets the angel he was sent to capture for Lucifer, King of Hell. With dark twists and secrets threatening to come to light, can Crighton find a path for redemption? If redemption is even possible for a demon?
I love stories about paranormal entities, fantasy, with a bit of romance thrown in. However, I was extremely disappointed by this story. I struggled to sit down and read. It started out strong, but then fell apart halfway through the book. The pacing halfway through the book was completely off; it felt rushed to me. While reading, it felt like I was experiencing whiplash jumping from one scene to the next instead of scenes flowing together seamlessly. I would also catch myself re-reading sections because I would feel lost or confused due to lack of detail or a new detail being thrown in randomly.
I do enjoy forced proximity tropes, but felt the author did this just because. The main characters are trapped together, guess we should force them to be together. It was not believable for me at all. If it were more of a slow burn, more conflict, and details were thrown in? I would have been more invested in their love story.
I also felt the author was telling me what was going on instead of showing me. You are always supposed to show the reader what is happening instead of flat out telling them, it takes away from the fun of reading.
I had such high expectations for this book and was sadly disappointed. This had such potential to be an amazing story. I am giving this book two stars due to the pacing being too fast, lack of detail, and the confusing parts.
