UNYIELDING DESTINY REVIEW 4/5 stars

Spiros Gratsias has a talent for describing in photographic detail, setting of scenes and emotions. Elements of the story felt like a first-hand account with inclusion of surrounding landmarks and clever narration from characters alongside notable historic events of the time period. The integration of real events from reports and details in history of Frank Morris escaping Alcatraz created a spark of interest for me and I was compelled to choose this book to review. I think many would appreciate the twist on true events with an adventurous, thrilling ‘what if’ alternative ending to a high-profile case which was initially reported with no credible evidence of the escapees survival.
I must admit my disappointment in Scott Eastens character arc, his adult life lacked depth and the feeling of missed opportunities for cross over with Scott and Frank lingered. For a storyline that seemed to hint their destiny was entwined, the result fell short for me and felt like a rushed wrap up of loose ends.
I did appreciate the Epilogue and felt that was a lovely nod to how an instinctual gesture from Frank would result in a different path for Maria’s life and unborn child. A sort of Butterfly Effect flow on in how ones actions can alter events in a larger scale which works with the theme of destiny.
A general overview of this book finds a few racial slurs in chapter nine with the flashbacks of Korean War which I felt were a realistic expectation of language and not overused. Profanity is sprinkled throughout the story, once again in my opinion, tastefully and adds to the character traits.
The style of writing is very easily followed, well edited and the story unfolds in a timely manner. At no time did I feel it dragged on unnecessarily, I felt captivated throughout and even found myself checking how many pages I had left toward the end as I craved more detail.
I enjoyed this read and would be thrilled to see an altered or lengthened version.
