Two different places. Two different girls. Two different trafficking rings. On a small Romanian farm, we have young Alina. She and her parents were very poor, and could only dream of finding better jobs and having better lives. So when a young man arrived with news of an opportunity for Alina for a well-paying job working abroad, they could hardly believe it. Alina packed her bags and bid her parents goodbye, as she excitedly left her hometown for a better life. But it took only a couple of hours for things to go awry. Tied up and shoved into a small room aboard a steamship with six other girls, Alina realized that she may have bit off more than she could chew.

In another country, best friends Lin Hui and Cheung Mingzhu received scholarships from Shenzhen University in China and transferred to Queen’s University in Ireland. They are awed by university life and spent their time exploring the city and the people. And when their gorgeous lecturer invited them to coffee with him and another instructor, they happily accepted. It took so little time for their lives to be turned upside down after that. They come into great wealth but at a horrible price. With Mingzhu dead and Lin Hui in hiding, will the detectives be able to uncover the horrible secrets surrounding all these girls? Or will the Shadow prevail? And who is the Shadow? The Trafficking Murders by Brian O’Hare is the thrilling fifth book in the Inspector Sheehan Mystery Series, and it took us on a wild chase as we tried to uncover the secrets of the murders that took place.

I loved this book! It’s been so long since I found a book I was genuinely interested in from start to finish, so I was so happy when I found myself eagerly looking forward to nighttime so I could continue reading. Some things I appreciated were the list of characters and acronyms in the very beginning. There were a lot of characters in this story, so the list kept me organized and helped whenever I forgot who a character was. And because this story took place in Ireland, as an American, there were some terms and acronyms that I didn’t understand, so I was grateful that the author defined everything beforehand.

There weren’t any things I disliked. Because this was a murder mystery told from the perspective of the detectives, there were a lot of lengthy discussions, so if you’re someone who prefers more action and less dialogue, then this book isn't for you. I like the mystery aspect, so I loved the discussions because they allowed me to review the evidence and try to figure out who the murderer was. Also, some people might worry because this is the fifth book in the series, but to be honest, I completely forgot it was part of a series until I got to the end. This book can easily stand on its own. All the characters and locations are explained, and you don't need to read the other books to understand and enjoy this one.

So for all of these reasons, I happily rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I didn’t find a single mistake, so I can say that this book was exceptionally well-edited. And while this book was all about human trafficking and the sex industry, these parts were glazed over and talked about in vague terms, so if you're unsure about reading this because of those scenes, then there's no reason to worry.

I would recommend this book to people who love murder mysteries. Like I said, there are lengthy discussions so if you want more murder and less mystery, then this isn't for you. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone under the age of 13, because there is some swearing and again, it's about sex and human trafficking.
