This book is not your typical "who done it" crime novel or thriller, it is so much more. This book takes you on a journey of discovery, both literally and figuratively. What happens when things do not go as planned? Can you trust the people around you? Will you be strong enough to ask the tough questions? Can you put your fear aside and do what is right?

The Diamonds of Devil's Tail: A Relic Novel is the 4th book in the Relic series by A.W. Baldwin. Even though this is part of a series, the book can be read on its own. I have not read any of the previous books in the series and I had no troubles following and understanding the story.

This book intertwines various groups into a gripping story about survival and becoming the person you are meant to be. The book starts with a 1950s jewelry heist then moves to modern times where the reader meets various people. Brayden is the character I related to the most. He is an aspiring writer who is working for his uncle in an insurance firm while trying to figure out what to do with his life. Brayden, his uncle, and a coworker win a once in a lifetime rafting trip in the Utah mountains. They are joined by various other individuals on the same trip. Relic is a hermit that protects the memories of the earth and his people. Ivan, Jebediah, and Barclay are a group of thieves looking to raid ancient artifacts and make a profit. Deputy Dawson is a law man on a mission to prove the existence of a bootlegging nomad in the area. These individuals will come to know each other in a most interesting way.

The author takes a lot of time to explain the scenery of the Utah mountains and the river. The areas are so well described that I could close my eyes and easily envision that I was there. Baldwin obviously has a great respect for nature and makes a point to discuss the importance of protecting the beauty around us.

This interesting and well written story drew me in from the beginning and kept me enthralled until the very end. If you love adventure and being outdoors this book is definitely for you.

I give this 5 out of 5 stars.
