Alina, a young girl from a poor family in Romania, is recruited by a passer-by to get better opportunities in Ireland for school. Excited, she starts the journey and immediately realizes he's not the person she thought he was when he hands her over to strange men at a dock. She immediately realizes she is just cargo and the ship crew treats her and five other girls as such. Meanwhile, Lin Hui in Ireland is getting increasingly nervous about the dangers that come with living lavishly while she attends Queen’s University. Dark things are happening in the shadows as Asian girls and university lecturers turn up dead. Police investigations led by Detective Sheehan erupt to uncover who the head of the operation is.

The Trafficking Murders by Brian O’Hare had me hooked right out the gate. There was suspense from beginning to end. A chilling police investigation takes the reader on a whirlwind of revelations. I admired O’Hare’s writing style and that he shows us the gritty and gruesome realities of human trafficking. The author narrated the perspective of Alina, Lin Hui and Matei in a way that was true to the plight of human trafficking victims. It showed all sides of the victims from preying on young poor kids to manipulating college students and trafficking boys for labor.

I formed no negative opinions while reading this book. I thought it was important that the author did not imply any tone of sympathy for the characters that aided the trafficking. The story was to the point and the different perspectives were surprisingly not distracting. Everything was cohesive.

For this reason, I rate the book a solid 5 out of 5 stars. This is a good piece that speaks about modern slavery and how trafficking does not always involve sex slaves. I found no errors which led me to believe that the editing was well done.

I recommend this book for teenagers so they can be aware of family, friends, or strangers that are predatory.
