Final Notice by Van Fleisher brings out the probable answers to a question that bugs the minds of at least a quarter of all humans: what happens next if I knew exactly when I will die? What are the things that I will do or will not do? Although we know that we will all die someday, some people still find it difficult to accept that fact. In the form of science fiction, Van Fleisher not only exposes a few out of numerous reactions to death but also how others can use even the knowledge of death to capitalize on others.

The story features a couple, Vince and Trudi, who are just coming to terms with the fact that they are aging and are no longer as proactive as they had been before. With the invention of the VT2 health monitoring watch by an extremely talented scientist called Vijay Patel, Vince and Trudi can know exactly when they will pass away. The couple also notice that they could easily purchase guns to use in whatever time they have left. The book samples not only the experience of this aging couple but also a diverse set of people in different phases of life who have limited time and spend it exploring the power of a firearm.

I found it intriguing and interesting how the author captured a good number of topics or themes in a book talking mainly about the use of guns: politics, racism, healthcare, anger, revenge, and a few instances of dark humor. The individual reactions of each character to the fact that they had limited time reflect almost exactly what many people will do in such situations. However, it was not comforting that most of the characters had to involve guns in their last days before death. I believe that this book was written to address the issue of an increasing number of firearms among individuals, especially in countries like the US. As an individual who has been in a war zone, I strongly believe nothing good comes from handing firearms to individuals, no matter what justification is given for it. The killings carried out by the different characters in Final Notice did nothing to change the fact that they were going to die. So why do it at all?

I found nothing negative about the book. In my opinion, the book sends out an indirect message discouraging the use of firearms and encourages better conduct and morals in associating with fellow human beings. I believe the book was professionally edited, as it was relatively easy to read and I spotted no errors. I am content to give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.

I recommend this book to people who enjoy science fiction. Also, I believe the book is ideal for people who have a genuine interest in the increasing casualties and deaths in the world today as a result of the minimally restricted use of firearms.
