The novel Just Die by E. Alan Fleischauer is a work of paranormal fiction that tells the story of Jake Silver, a young and accomplished advisor who experiences a stroke after selling his business. Despite his swift recovery, Jake finds out that he has a new and unexpected ability: he can simply point his finger at anything and say, 'just die,' causing it to die instantly. Unsure if this is a curse or a blessing, Jake enlists the help of his fiancée, Beth Ann, and his friend Omar to understand and control his power. Together, they attempt to use Jake's ability for good, including saving their country.
I particularly enjoyed the fact that Jake Silver, the protagonist, was a compassionate person who chose to use his newfound power to serve his country rather than harm those who crossed him. Overall, I found Just Die to be a well-executed book. The plot was fast-paced, the central idea was intriguing, and the cast of characters was diverse and captivating, making it difficult to stop reading. The book's engaging nature kept me turning the pages, making it a real page turner.
Surprisingly, the book fell short of my expectations, as I anticipated a more sinister, macabre, and dark storyline based on the book's title. Being a fan of dark thrillers, I was let down by the book's lack of suspense and darkness. Additionally, the story appeared to have too many unnecessary details that detracted from the overall narrative. For instance, the inclusion of trivial conversations, such as meet-and-greet exchanges, and excessive references to specific branded drinks detracted from the book's flow and pacing.
In my opinion, the book was expertly edited and did not contain any noticeable errors. I would suggest it to mature readers aged 18 and above who are fond of paranormal literature, as it includes drug usage, offensive language, and violent scenes that may not be suitable for individuals under 18. I would give the book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars instead of 5 out of 5 , as it did not satisfy my expectations of an outstanding dark thriller, and the story had too many extraneous details that were not needed.
