Morrow’s Con - Opening Gambit by James Earl introduces a conman unlike any other. Morrow is friendly, likable, organized, unintentionally funny and bad at fights. Fresh out of prison, he was trained in the art of the con by Edwin (his mentor) and is now working as a driver for a crime family in Phoenix. He likes to keep his head down, stay out of trouble but life has other plans. What begins as a safe, simple, straightforward con to help his friend turns out to be anything but that, and thus begins Morrow’s Opening Gambit!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. This was Morrow’s first full-fledged con. The task was simple: steal back a famous painting for a rich man in four weeks. The ticking time clock along with all the obstacles Morrow faces (and trust me, there’s a lot of them), makes it a page-turner. It takes no time to pick up pace and will keep you invested.

Earl paints an elaborate picture when it comes to his characters whilst keeping the narrative engaging, this was the biggest positive for me. All the people involved in this story had a solid personality and it made understanding them and their actions that much easier. While most of us won’t relate to their professional sides, they were all relatable from a human lens. That being said, I would’ve personally liked to know more about Morrow’s backstory but that should hardly keep you from reading this book.

There’s so much more I would like to say but it wouldn't be possible without giving out spoilers. The book presents a clean heist and a start to a potentially great series. Morrow’s strength is in reading people and he uses this to outthink them. This trait will either keep him alive or kill him, only time will tell.

I would like to rate this book a 4 out of 5. James Earl brings to life a charismatic character and am looking forward to reading more of Morrow’s Con.
