Review of Final Notice
Van Fleisher’s novel, Final Notice, is a thought-provoking work of fiction that explores the intersection of gun ownership for senior citizens and the use of advanced technology in predicting death. The story delves into the challenges faced by the elderly population, who are often vulnerable to violence and crime due to their age and physical limitations. The plot centers around Vince, an elderly man who, after being trampled by a young man on the street, begins to consider the idea of owning a gun for self-defense. The news of a rising trend of senior citizens purchasing guns for protection further piques his interest in the matter. The question of whether or not to buy a gun is a significant moral dilemma for Vince, as he grapples with the fear of becoming a victim of violence versus the potential risks of owning a firearm.
As the story progresses, it introduces a new concept of high-tech wearable devices that can predict death in advance. The "VT2" is a smartwatch developed by Vijay Patel that can monitor the wearer's vital signs and predict death 30 days in advance. The introduction of this technology adds a new dimension to the plot, as it raises ethical questions about the role of advanced technology in determining the course of human life.
The author masterfully weaves together the themes of gun ownership and technological advancements, creating a unique narrative that explores the complexities of human behavior and societal norms. The plot is engaging, with numerous twists and turns that keep the reader on the edge of their seat.
The story also highlights the issues surrounding the aging population, including the isolation and loneliness that many seniors face in their daily lives. Through Vince's character, the author draws attention to the challenges and struggles of the elderly, providing a poignant commentary on the importance of addressing the needs of this population. I have no reservations in giving this book a well-deserved 5 out of 5 stars, as I found it to be free of any errors and a truly enlightening and thought-provoking read.
Overall, Final Notice is a compelling and thought-provoking novel that explores complex social issues in a creative and engaging way. The combination of gun ownership, wearable technology, and the struggles of the aging population make for a fascinating read that is sure to captivate and stimulate the reader. However, I do not recommend this book to children as it contains sensitive topics such as killing, cursing, suicide, and other violent acts. It is important to consider the age-appropriateness of the material before reading this book.
