Dead Reckoning by Lea O'Harra is a unique murder mystery about a woman, Gillian aka "Gilly," who comes back to her hometown for her mother's funeral only to have her past dug up and childhood trauma revisited. When they were children, Gilly and her friend Sally stumble upon a dead infant wrapped in a box lying in the tall grasses of the cemetery where they were playing. After deciding to bury the baby and keep her a secret, two children are murdered in their small town. Several years later and well into adulthood, Gilly is confronted with her past as children start to go missing once again. The townspeople start to wonder if all of this is a coincidence or if it has something to do with Gilly's impromptu arrival back to town. This book is a solid 4/5 because it grabs your attention from the very first chapter. There is so much drama surrounding Gilly with her current personal life and her past, it is impossible not to want to know the full story. Each character is given a distinct and descriptive personality in such a way that you can imagine them speaking as if they were right in front of you. The only reason I did not give this book a 5/5 is because I wish the physical attributes of the characters were more descriptive. The author does a great job at focusing on detailing their personalities, but when it comes to what the characters actually look like, I find myself trying to look for all the lost pieces. I can hear their voices but not see their faces in my imagination. All in all, I would recommend this book to any adult who likes crime and is looking for a mystery to solve and an easy read.
