Review of Endgame
Play a sucker to catch a sucker is Law #21 in the book 48 Laws of Power. It is a rule that William Reed embraced and implemented through the character Nathaniel(Nat) Jameson in his book Endgame. It is timeless crime fiction. In Endgame, the themes of espionage and terrorism are immensely explored.
The protagonist, Nathaniel Jameson, is the deputy ambassador of St. James Court in the United Kingdom. He wakes up one day with an idea that is off the world, works on it then bounces it to his senior, Ambassador Preston. In his heart, Nat wishes that Preston would decline the idea but in his mind, he knows it is the only thing close to accomplishing the eradication of terrorists and extremist Muslims. Fortunately, Preston approves the proposal, and the two forward it to the President who approves it. So clandestine is this idea that it is codenamed operation Endgame, which is the source of its title, targeting Al-Qaeda. The secretive nature of the operation is proven by its being known by about ten people.
Support is essential for the success of any mission. In Endgame, the support is shown through the corroboration from the President, his vice, and the Ambassador. Another piece of evidence is when Sonja, Nat's wife, and Preston's wife when they let their husbands take part in a dangerous mission. On another hand, Nat's courage, strong will and competence stand out. Despite knowing the nature of the operation, he is determined to see it through to make the world a better place for nothing in return. Additionally, Nat exhibits true leadership skills by taking the wheel and steering it to the vision. For instance, when he is given the offer to use someone else for the mission, he declines and puts himself on the front.
Terrorism is a problem that many will appreciate its dying down. William Reed paints a picture of what it would take to solve the problem and what the operation would look like. The author shares its growth and effects as well. The theme is deeply explored. Another likable aspect is the development of the plot. The pace is set in the prologue and for sure the reader can tell where the story is headed if they are up to speed with current events. If the prologue sends chills down the spine by giving a tip of the iceberg, what about the whole iceberg? Finally, the characters are given enough room to grow and occupy their space without blocking each other.
Endgame garners 5 out of 5 stars since it was entertaining, captivating, challenging beliefs, and spoke into a heavy matter. Literature is a reflection of society and what happens in it and could not have been spotlighted in a better way.
The read is great for lovers of crime fiction, however, people from some religions may be offended since it highlights the extremists from the Islam religion.
