Crazy Time: A Bizarre Battle with Darkness and Divine by L. Andrew Cooper tells the story of a young woman, Lily Henshaw, who thinks she is cursed because of the unfortunate events that have been happening to her. After a night of birthday celebrations, Lily and her three friends were driving home when a pickup truck started to trail them on the highway. Panic overtook them as they got into what appeared to be an accident but was actually a deliberate act by the men in the truck. With her three friends murdered, followed by a terrible chain of events of mythic proportions, Lily started to question God and battled between God and Satan. In the process, she started to hallucinate, unable to tell what was real and what was fake. How would Lily navigate life with survivors’ guilt? What will happen to her faith in God, or lack thereof?

Though this book is not a religious book, this story resembles the story of Job from the Bible; the Book of Job. If you know the story of Job, then you can only imagine what Lily was going through. The author did a good job at showing the comparisons of Lily’s unfortunate occurrences to Job’s and showing Lily’s struggle with faith. This may possibly make Lily’s story significant to readers. The book also appeared to be professionally written and edited.

I found the events in the book to be a bit over the top, and the way they were described made it hard to visualize the scenes in my head. I disliked that. This made it challenging to understand certain events in the book and to differentiate what was real from what was imagined. I caught myself thinking out loud, "What just happened?" and rereading, thinking I missed something. I finished the book with the same confusion I had while reading it. Another negative about the book is the placement of the pictures at the end of some chapters. Though the pictures can be overlooked, they didn’t add much to the overall quality of the publication.

Lily’s story was traumatic and emotional, which can be relatable to some people, as I’m sure there is someone out there who has questioned God because of how their life is going. Though this was a decent read, the book did not hold my interest as I had hoped. Thus, I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars. The book had suspense, horror, and mystery with little humor; however, the descriptive style of writing prevented me from giving it a higher rating.

This book would be suitable for readers who like horror, thrillers, and crime stories. Also, the book may be offensive to Christians because of the humor surrounding God. Thus, it would be suitable for a mature audience due to the nature of the story and the language used.
