Review of Chief Among Us
Central Illinois Insurance Company has received its reasonable share of incidents, but nothing like what blew up on February 13, 2012. At the start of another seemingly typical day, all employees receive an email displaying each individual’s salary information. With tensions high, an employee is found dead at her computer with the salary file open. Not long after that, another employee is stabbed to death at a local garden shop. Fear is growing, and employees want to know who is responsible. As police dive into their investigation, Maria Majors, former CFO of Central who was terminated 51 days prior, decides she will help uncover this mystery. With the help of her ex-brother-in-law, Max, and Michelle, the local garden shop owner, Maria is determined to prove she is innocent. But unfortunate information keeps leaking from Central, a swingers club is discovered, and bomb threats abound. What in the world is happening at Central? Who is responsible? The twists and thrills never cease in L.A. Noble’s novel Chief Among Us: The Third Max and Michelle Mystery.
This novel was sensational to read from the start. Right away the tension is addressed: Maria made a racy mistake by going out with the “good old boys” of Central to prove herself as CFO, drank a bit too much, and posed topless for a photo that is circulating all the male inboxes. Effective immediately, Maria is terminated. The succeeding chapter instantly continues the tension of the salary emails to everyone, and fingers point in every direction. This fast-paced story keeps you inundated until the final pages. I enjoyed the thrill of trying to uncover the secrets and solve the mystery, which didn’t become apparent until the final few chapters of the book.
The only issue I had with this story was the number of characters involved. Midway through, I had to start preparing a chart to figure out who did what and how they related to other characters. For an enjoyable mystery, this was relatively too much work for me.
I only noted a few errors while reading. This book was revised well. The dialogue between the characters makes the story exciting, although I was a little disappointed at how many times the author used “he said / she said” instead of other dialogue tags. Because it was a hard-to-put-down story, I award this book five out of five stars. There are twins in the story that made me laugh.
Those who enjoy a divine mystery will want to read this book. Those who like fast-paced, action-packed novels will find this exciting to read. If you’re like me and don’t want to think too hard while embarking on a mystery, this most likely isn’t the story for you. But, the excitement of the plot made up for the number of characters and their role in this story.
