This book, The One Who Rules by Tanner Owen , is written as a first-person account by the author who narrates a discovery that leads to life-changing events. The plot revolves around a mysterious body of people who dominate the world. The unidentified author narrating the book takes us through his journey of uncovering the mystery around these people. This group does not consist of random people but almost 200 world leaders, corporate executives and international movers and shakers.

The opening chapter of the book sets the tone for the entire plot. In the beginning, you get the feeling that the narrator is simply hysterical. As a reader, I dismissed his feelings of paranoia and fear about the mysterious list of people. The first quarter of the book moves slowly as Owen sets his plot and will leave you frustrated with the question, “Who are these people?”. However, after that, the plotline moves very quickly with a lot of twists and turns. The story is carefully written keeping in mind the facts.

Owen has wonderfully built the unidentified author’s character. The narrator is a struggling author who happens to come across revealing information on world leaders. Owen described this discovery as utmost chance when the narrator was watching a recent news piece. But at the same time, this discovery is inevitable. Owen builds a realistic and ordinary world that it is very hard not to binge-read this book.

I would like to give The One Who Rules a rating of four out of five stars. While it is a very interesting and gripping read, the language in some portions of the book is quite literary which was not required. I do understand that the narrator is a writer by profession which merits the writing style but some readers might find it hard to follow. Certain references to books or events such as “The Manchurian Candidate” made it difficult to understand the context.

This book would be greatly appreciated by readers who enjoy mystery and thriller novels. As mentioned above, the book has a slow start and picks up pace around the middle. It is my suggestion to read patiently and keep in mind that the book does get interesting. I would not recommend it to people who like fast-paced stories as they would not be motivated to continue through the book.
