Review of Jurisdiction Denied
Judge Marty Goldstein, the Supervising Judge of Sylmar Juvenile Hall has a very interesting story to tell. He describes Sylmar Juvenile Hall as the "undeodorized, unshaven armpit of the County delinquency system." And that's just the start. If he's not freezing in his court chambers because of faulty electrical systems, he is complaining about how the political structures of California are ruining the justice system for all. He especially hates Governor Brown for his involvement in the chaos of the justice system. But there's a fun side to Judge Marty Goldstein. He loves movies and women, but he is single and lonely, and he spends a lot of time thinking of the sexiest blonds to ever grace the silver screen. We get to know the man as he performs his job as a judge in a system that is rarely rewarding. His main focus is to lock up juvenile delinquents and make the streets safer for ordinary citizens.
Jurisdiction Denied by Jack Gold and Marc Debbaudt is a humorous drama about a judge that has quite a lot to say about the justice system as a whole. From the onset, it was apparent that Judge Marty Goldstein is an open book who doesn't mince his words for anything or nobody. I enjoy such characters. They are fun, but most importantly, they are quite memorable. And I loved that the character was the focal point of the whole narration. The story is written almost like an autobiography of sorts, and that makes it interesting.
I would say that the writing style used in the book is exquisite. The authors put their best foot forward and delivered a beautifully written book that feels like the work of highly accomplished writers. I would have loved the plot to be as deep as the writing, however. Although the authors did try to incorporate interesting plot moments, the plot didn't feel complete in any way. If the story would have been a lot more expansive, I would have praised the book more.
Also, I don't understand the editing process that went into the book. Some things seemed very clumsy and unprofessional, which lowered the quality of the book considerably. With that out of the way, I rate the novel 3 out of 5 stars. The thin plot and the poor editing led me to this rating.
I think that this book could go down well with people who are into crime novels even though, formulaic-wise, it's not really a crime novel. But I think the contents of the book and the language used would appeal to those readers who appreciate crime novels.
