Sisters in Cold Blood by Kay A. Oliver takes the reader on a mystery adventure in both the present and the past. Keri, a young woman with a love of puzzles, has recently inherited a house from her recently deceased uncle. As Keri and her husband begin to make renovations on Grosse Point house Keri discovers a confession letter from Ricardo Mathers, a serial killer in 1909 who was never convicted of any murders. Making all the murders that were confessed to in the confessional letter unsolved cases. As a result, Keri begins to conduct her own research following the clues that Ricardo Mathers has left in his letter as she believes that the police department will not look into cold cases as Mathers and his victims are all deceased. Keri research brings her closer to answers that she is seeking; they will also bring more dangers to Keri’s doorstep. Will the unknown women be able to finally receive the justice they deserve or will Keri become a victim herself.

According to about the author, “Kay A. Oliver graduated from California State University, Fullerton with a Communication: Radio, TV, Film degree…She is a current member of the TV academy.” (Oliver, 2022 p. 174). Oliver’s film background definitely shows in Sisters in Cold Blood. There was just the right amount of description that did not overwhelm me but also provided enough description for the settings and characters. One aspect that I enjoyed was how Oliver gave Grosse Point a personality as it enhanced the idea that the house had secrets and a story of its own. In chapter 1 of Sisters in Cold Blood, Grosse Point ‘was ready to give up its confidences.’ (Olivier, 2022 p. 6). The use of the literary device personification gives the house more mystery that drew my attention in. The characters in Sisters in Cold Blood were also very relatable. I was able to enjoy reading the novel and did not find myself becoming frustrated over the decisions of the characters. There were also many times throughout the novel that I could see myself making the same decision as well as having the same emotions that Keri and Jade both went through.

While there was nothing outstanding that was negative, there were a couple places where the wording was a little bit unclear. Early on in the book Keri is talking about a ring that her mother gave her saying, “It is a symbol of her free spirit.” (Olivier, 2022 p. 6). It was not clear whose free spirit was being referred to Keri or her mother’s. These instances rarely occurred in the book, meaning that the writer did have the book edited as it did not occur often.

Since I enjoyed following along with Keri’s sleuthing skills in Sisters in Cold Blood I would rate this book four out of five stars. Oliver’s usage of literary devices and descriptions throughout the entire book helped to make Sisters in Cold Blood a page turning novel. I would definitely be interested in any sequels with any future mysteries with Keri.

I would recommend this book for one who enjoys reading about unsolved mysteries. Sisters in Cold Blood would be appropriate for children between the ages of 15 to 18 years old. In addition to this, this book would also appeal to young adult readers who enjoy reading mysteries. Sisters in Cold Bloodwould not be for a younger audience like middle schoolers as there are a couple implied scenes through the book. I hope you enjoy following Keri as she discovers the unsolved murders in Sisters in Cold Blood.
