Review of Requiem For A Queen
Requiem For A Queen is a fantasy novel by Kaylin Mcfarren and the third installment in the Gehenna series. It follows half-angel and half-demon Samara Daemonium, pregnant with Lucifer's son and on the run from Satan himself. After escaping Hell, her journey starts in the harsh and cold Gnarly forest, where Samara encounters Onoskelis, a shapeshifter and old friend who offers her refuge from the cold and the many searching for her. Samara's mission is to survive and protect her child at all costs from Lucifer and his daughter, Lucinda. Follow Samara as she adventures through an epic journey while harnessing her powers and making mystical allies and enemies along the way.
I hadn't read a Fantasy novel in quite a while, yet this one caught my attention. From the summary, I could understand that it was also heavily focused on family, friendship, and a strong female character. While reading, it became my favorite aspect of the book. Samara was never selfish, knowing that she needed help from various friends and allies to protect her son, which was very refreshing to read. The story was fast-paced, with Samara in the Gnarly forest in one chapter, then in Hell, or somewhere else in the next. One could never expect all the trials and obstacles the protagonist faced along the way. All this kept the story extremely engaging for me as a reader. Another aspect of the book which kept me turning the pages was the fact that there were multiple points of view. It even allowed me to understand better all the other complex characters in the story. Additionally, I must mention that the mystical creatures featured in this book were all beautifully described and were a fabulous addition to the story.
In terms of negative aspects, I felt it was difficult to grasp certain aspects of the story since I hadn't read the previous two books in the series. Admittedly, This wasn't an error on the author's part, but it did affect how much I enjoyed the book. Another point is that certain secondary characters and storylines felt unnecessary as they did not add much to the story and did not come together with the main plot. Overall, I felt like the primary negative aspect was that a lot was going on in the book, it did keep things exciting, but I wish everything came together better at the end.
I decided to rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I chose to deduct 1 star as not all the storylines tied together as I hoped they would, making parts of the book feel unnecessary. In other words, as a body of work, I found it was enjoyable to read, yet it was not tied neatly with a bow or refined all the way.
I recommend this book to readers who enjoy a good fantasy novel mainly because it is jam-packed with fascinating mystical creatures such as dragons, witches, and tiny magical sprites. With multiple points of view and adventure in practically every chapter, I recommend this book to readers who enjoy fast-paced plots and epic page-turning journeys. Lastly, I have to mention that this book is unsuitable for children due to profanities and violence.
