Review of Jurisdiction Denied
Jurisdiction Denied is co-written by Jack Gold and Marc Debbaudt. The book follows the harsh realities of the criminal justice system. It focuses on juveniles and the law. It also follows the judge who simply wanted to change the system that would benefit the juveniles. The protagonist within this story, Averisi, is taken into a juvenile camp in California, and he quickly learns that it was not an easy ride. The authors portray the reality of the criminal justice system really well. This book is most definitely a must-read, and can be enjoyed by many.
Averisi is a character we begin to be introduced to as he is sentenced to a short time in a juvenile camp situated in California. He was brought into the camp because of his involvement in an assault. What he thought was an easy ride, was the complete opposite. It was not long when he became involved in an altercation with a fellow inmate, and they decided that the altercation would be resolved by a fight, and therefore, they agreed on a time and place suitable for them both. However, disaster struck when during his walk to the location, the inmate assaulted him and viciously stabbed a pencil into Averisi's eye, blinding him and almost killing him. This shocked Averisi and he began to realize how life in the camp would be, harsh. This was a set back for the judge because he did not know how to cope with this case. The question is; how did he handle this case?
Jurisdiction Denied is one book that I will remember. It portrays the harsh realities of the criminal justice system well. The book cover and the title fit well with the content of the book. The bold colours the authors have chosen to include on the cover grabbed my attention and I am delighted that I had the fortunate attempt to read this book. Also, the development of the characters was shown brilliantly throughout the book. One character that I gave particular attention to was Averisi and how he survived his time within the system. I, often felt quite sad for the character and his altercation with the other inmate, which led to unfortunate events for him. Moreover, one character who caught my attention other than Averisi, was Hilda. Hilda was a character of interest to me because of the way she kills people, and yet feels no remorse for her catastrophic actions. Her character is spooky, and also quite eerie, which is why I like her. Her character is unique to the story's plot. I found that the scenes were also well developed and created imagery that felt realistic. At regular intervals, I felt that I was transitioned into the authors' world. The language the authors have chosen to use is simple, engaging and not complex. My initial thought of the book was that the language was going to be quite hard, and complex for some readers because of the focus of the book. However, I was amazed to find this was not the case. I found the book easy to read. In terms of the focus of the book, which was the juvenile camp and the reality surrounding it, I found that it describes the harsh realities of life in a juvenile camp in a realistic way. If we think of juvenile camps today, we understand that there would be violence within the camp, therefore, I am confident that both authors have done great in-depth research surrounding the focus of the book. I like this.
There was nothing major I disliked about the book. I felt that at the beginning of the book it was a little slow; however it gradually picked up. This was just an observation and did not disturb my read of the book, as I thoroughly enjoyed the book. There were some instances of profanity and slight references to sexual nature, but this was not explicit. In terms of grammatical errors and format, I did not find any major errors; hence the book being professionally edited.
I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. The authors have portrayed the criminal justice system well, and have created scenes that are believable. The book shows how the system affects security, which is also a bonus. I found no obvious reason to take away a star because of how well the book is written and the way it describes the system. They should be commended for this. I, for one, enjoyed my read. In terms of recommendations, this book would appeal to those individuals who have an interest in law and the criminal justice system. However, I would not suggest it appeals to young individuals because of the profanity within the book and the sexual occurrences I came across.
