Everyone has some ideas relating to the work of policemen. Most of those notions were drawn from highly polished screen shows. A lot of these ideologies fall apart after reading Twisted But True by Darren Burch. Mr. Burch has inscribed a collection of thirty-four stories covering his life as a police officer and prior to joining the police unit. The stories are told from the first-person point of view. He starts with personal stories. These encompass an accident he observed in his teens, his marriage, his family, and his search for a job while being a single dad. Stories that follow include incidents that happened while he was working in the Phoenix police department. They range from accidents, murders, and sex crimes, to half-crazy incidents.

I liked many aspects in Twisted But True. Firstly, Mr. Burch uses enticing language. He plays with words to come up with jokes, puns, and humorous situations. For instance, the characters have been given fictional names that are very telling. Names such as Mr. Stocky, Ms. Liar-Liar, Batboy, and Hollywood are humorous with a sense of truth in them. In one of the stories, Hippo Hell, the author draws a comical picture of himself on fire in a hippo costume as he runs around. Secondly, the incidents are given with just enough details. Each story is fast-paced. Moreover, during the reading, I was able to visualize the setting of the stories, the characters, and the tone used. There are notable twists at the end of the tales.

Thirdly, the humanity of the police in this writing is admirable. Mr. Burch responds to dangerous situations by ensuring everyone's safety at the risk of his life. Many incidents mentioned show great sacrifice, courage, and discipline. In the story, Chasing The Mad Cow, the dangerous beast climbed over the patrol car and later knocked him to the ground. A story in Chapter thirty-three demonstrates another humane act. through unorthodox means, he saves the life of a homeless man shot in the neck by a slaying maniac.

I found nothing to disapprove of in the book. It was exceptionally edited and well organized. It was clear that the author was a seasoned storyteller due to the precise yet complete nature of every story.

Everything considered, I rate Twisted but True 4 out of 4 stars. The work is entertaining and educational. There is no doubt after reading the book that fact is stranger than fiction. The reader is enticed by the bizarre things that police undergo. Suspense was maintained from tale to tale.

I recommend this book to lovers of nonfiction and short stories. Readers who enjoy memoirs will like the book. It tells about the life of Mr. Burch without focusing too much on him. Those who enjoy police and crime will be glad to read it as well. There are some details about sex and death that may be disturbing to some readers.
