Review of Madam Vice President
Vera Ochman was three when her mother died of cancer. Her father was overcome by his grief and to escape him, Vera enrolled in summer school. It was there that she met Felipe Sanchez, the leader of an inner-city gang. Two nights before her eighteenth birthday, the gang went to the Wicked Whiskey Bar where BB, a member of the gang, revealed himself to be an undercover FBI agent. Felipe killed him, however, it was Vera who took the fall. Ben Ochman died that night after hearing the news of his daughter's imprisonment. Vera was left alone with no other choice than to turn on her notorious lover and his gang or face life in prison.
Fast forward twenty seven years, Vera Ochman is now General Victoria Pierce. She has earned the respect and admiration of her fellow soldiers and her lover of 25 years, Senator Sam Eagan. When the Senator decides to run for president, Victoria is by his side as his military advisor. Victoria is offered a chance to help Senator Eagan by campaigning alongside him as his vice president. She exceeds Sam, his team, and her own expectations. The world falls for the heroic woman who rose from humble beginnings. Victoria’s new friend, reporter Grace Brandon starts to question Victoria’s past. Senator Sam Eagan and Victoria Pierce win the election. Grace completes her investigation after Victoria has ascended to acting president of the United States. It is time for Victoria to be honest about her past.
The novel Madam Vice President captured my attention; learning of Victoria's secret past in the beginning kept the tension high as I waited for the inevitable truth to be revealed. Julian Mann, author of Madam Vice President , wrote Vera/Victoria to be a complex character, one that I could not only sympathize with, I found myself also understanding her reasoning behind even her most shocking decisions. She fought for her new life, an inspiring example of the mistakes we make in our youth and how we are not defined by them. Mann reveals a glimpse into the complexities of campaigning for the most powerful position in the country, while maintaining a secret past.
To me there was little to dislike about the book. Even with my indifference to politics, I found myself initially intrigued by its premise. I wasn't dissatisfied in the least and should I stumble upon it in my library I would read it once again. I also found minimal spelling errors leading me to believe that the book was professionally edited. I was a little disappointed that the storm I anticipated wasn’t as grave as I had previously believed; however, Victoria handled it the way she handles everything, skillfully.
Accordingly, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I give a slightly lower rating because certain anticipations were greater than the outcome, but nevertheless Madam Vice President was a great novel I recommend.
